Sachse Construction led the reconstruction of 12 SITE Centers Corporation properties in Puerto Rico affected by Hurricane Maria. The project team encountered numerous challenges while working on properties spread across the island, requiring strategic logistical planning and adaptive solutions.
The primary challenges were limited resources and a significant labor shortage. Nearly every structure in Puerto Rico required some level of reconstruction after the hurricane, creating intense demand for materials and skilled trades. Sachse Construction’s strong relationships with local trade partners proved crucial throughout the reconstruction program. Many partners who had worked with Sachse before the hurricane continued to support the effort despite the labor shortage.
Another obstacle the team faced was the island-wide power outage. Because of the outage, there was a limited supply of working electrical meters. Utility companies collected functioning meters from vacant buildings to reallocate them to other properties.
Many of the SITE Centers Corporation properties were vacant and required mold remediation. Without a working meter on-site, the restoration team could not access electricity and therefore could not power the equipment needed for remediation. In these cases, the project team contacted the utility company and negotiated a timeline for installing a replacement meter. The team then reworked the schedule to focus on portions of the project that did not require electricity in the interim.
